Program Overview

Program Overview: Early Intervention for K-Grade 1


This early intervention program is designed for children in grades K-Grade 1, with no formal diagnosis required. The program takes a multi-disciplinary approach, combining the expertise of various professionals to address the child’s individual needs and promote their overall development. The key focus areas include:


Social and Emotional Regulation Skills: Helping children develop the ability to identify, understand, and manage their emotions. This includes building self-regulation strategies to cope with challenging situations and improve emotional responses.

School Readiness Skills: Preparing children for a successful academic experience by enhancing skills like following instructions, maintaining attention, transitioning between activities, and fostering a positive attitude towards learning.


Communication Skills: Strengthening both expressive and receptive communication, allowing children to more effectively interact with peers, teachers, and family members.


Social Skills: Teaching essential social behaviors such as sharing, taking turns, cooperating, and resolving conflicts with peers and adults.

Partnership Program


The Primary Pathway Program is a collaborative partnership designed to fill the gap in early intervention services in the north. Created in partnership with Creative Therapy, Nokiwiin Tribal Council, and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, this program aims to provide children in grades K-Grade 1 with the essential skills they need to be successful in school and beyond.


The program focuses on helping children develop key skills in areas such as social and emotional regulation, communication, social skills, and school readiness. By combining the expertise of various professionals, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), and Occupational Therapy (OT), the program provides a well-rounded approach to support each child's unique developmental needs.


The Primary Pathway Program is committed to ensuring that children in northern communities have access to high-quality early intervention services, setting the foundation for academic and social success in school.

Program Overview

Program Eligibility

  • Grade K-1
  • Requires support in the area of social, emotional regulation skills, and/or language development 
  • Must be on a modified school day
  • Must be students of Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board
  • No formal diagnosis required (FASD, ODD, ASD, ADHD and children with other developmental disabilities may qualify)

Team Members

The Primary Pathway Program uses a multi-disciplinary approach, bringing together a team of professionals from various fields, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), and Occupational Therapy (OT), to provide comprehensive support for each child's unique developmental needs. This collaborative approach ensures that children receive well-rounded care, addressing their social, emotional, communication, and school readiness skills.

Program Duration

The Primary Pathway Program is designed as a 12-month program, offering continuous support and intervention to children throughout the year. During this time, children receive 1:1 support, allowing for individualized attention to help them develop essential skills. While the program does not focus directly on academics, it concentrates on teaching the precursor skills to learning, such as social and emotional regulation, communication, and school readiness skills, ensuring children are prepared for success in their classroom environment. The program also focuses on fostering a positive learning history within the school, building a foundation of success that can be built upon as children progress. This personalized approach helps ensure that children are well-prepared to thrive academically and socially in the future.

Referrals

Referrals to the Primary Pathway Program are received through an internal referral system at the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board and are then screened by Creative Therapy for eligibility.
